mid-century compound of david lynch hits the market

The David Lynch mid-century Compound spreading across 2.3 acres in Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles, hits the market. A 1963 Lloyd Wright design, the property consists of five contiguous parcels centered around the Beverly Johnson House. The home serves as the architectural anchor for an expanded creative complex that filmmaker David Lynch assembled over several decades, a convergence of mid-century architectural heritage, Hollywood cultural history, and cinematic production infrastructure.

The design exemplifies what architectural historians call hillside modernism, an approach that responds to Los Angeles’s challenging topography. Bold geometric forms and extensive glass walls maximize the views while creating seamless indoor-outdoor transitions. Lloyd Wright, the son of Frank Lloyd Wright, designed the structure to follow the natural contours of the hillside rather than imposing a rigid geometric grid. The elements of post-and-beam construction come through too, with exposed structural parts as well as large expanses of glass, likely single-pane in the original 1963 construction.

Listed property that appears in the movie Lost Highway (1997)

David Lynch acquired the neighboring properties at 7029 and 7035 Senalda Drive of his mid-century Compound to expand his residence and include his workshop and studio. The listing includes the filmmaker’s private editing suite and screening room within the residential structure, complete with the acoustic treatment as well as video and audio equipment. In 1991, the filmmaker commissioned Eric Lloyd Wright, Lloyd Wright’s son and Frank Lloyd Wright’s grandson, to design the pool and pool house, creating what architectural historians would recognize as a rare example of three-generation family design continuity on a single property and resulting in a pool house design that complements the original 1963 structure.

David Lynch’s collaboration on his mid-century Compound appears in the two-story guest house and one-bedroom structure finished in smooth grey plaster. The style and finish align with the filmmaker’s documented aesthetic preferences and create visual continuity across structures built at different times by different designers. The choice of stained concrete, mixed materials, and hardwood flooring reflects mid-century modern material preferences while incorporating updates for modern living requirements. The Historic Places LA recognizes the property as ‘excellent example of Mid-Century Modern/Organic residential architecture’, and one of the houses in the mid-century Compound appears in David Lynch’s movie Lost Highway (1997) as the Madison residence.

The david lynch collection head to auction in LA

David Lynch artifacts, from movie props and unfinished scripts to his very own cameras, musical instruments, furniture designs, and even a custom director’s chair, head to auction. On June 18th, 2025, starting at 10am Pacific Time in Los Angeles, the David Lynch collection auction event by Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies takes place. It is part of the auction company’s and network’s Hollywood Legends series of archival collections from the industry’s revered figures. For the David Lynch collection auction, the event presents over 450 items that come directly from the filmmaker’s home and personal possessions.

The sale hopes to offer a look at his creative life through the personal artifacts he used to use and work with in his everyday and cinematic life.  The items originate from his film projects, his personal woodshop, and his art studio, so much so that they include props, art supplies, furniture he designed and built, and equipment from his music recording studio. In fact, the handmade coffee table, one-of-one conference table, and homemade wheeled cabinet the filmmaker designed are in the auction event. Other items connect to his other films and personal interests, such as a set of four prop menus from the Winkie’s diner location in the film Mulholland Drive. There is also a boomerang-style sofa of the same model seen in the 1997 film Lost Highway.

From film prints to custom director’s chair

Several items in the David Lynch collection auction relate directly to the filmmaker, artist, and musician’s work as a director. One lot features his very own custom director’s chair he used during productions (it even has his name on the back). Another item is David Lynch’s personal 35mm film print of his first feature film, Eraserhead. This print of the 1977 film is significant because Eraserhead launched his career.

It achieved a cult status, playing as a midnight movie for years in cities and establishing his signature filmmaking style. The auction also includes many items connected to his series Twin Peaks. One lot contains a red curtain and a black-and-white zig-zag rug from Lynch’s home. These pieces match the design of the Black Lodge, an important and otherworldly location in the show. Another item is a large, framed photograph of a nuclear bomb explosion. This photo appeared in the office of Gordon Cole, the character David Lynch played in Twin Peaks: The Return.

Objects include original finished and unfinished scripts

The David Lynch collection auction shows his life outside of film as well. Take the espresso machines and bean grinders, which hint at the filmmaker’s appreciation for coffee. The auction features several musical instruments, including a Parker Fly electric guitar he used on his solo albums. Another instrument is a custom five-neck console steel guitar that was designed by David Lynch and built by luthier Danny Ferrington. Some of the presented objects are his original finished and unfinished scripts, including Mulholland Drive, Ronnie Rocket, The Dream of the Bovine, The Straight Story, Wild at Heart, Lost Highway, and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

The David Lynch collection auction allows the filmmaker’s fans a chance to own the objects, designs, scripts, artworks, cameras, musical instruments, and more from many areas of the artist’s life. He is a remembered filmmaker, artist, and musician. His body of work includes films and series such as Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Lost Highway, and Mulholland Drive. His work across different media has influenced film and television for decades. This auction presents an opportunity for the public to acquire items he owned and used, and Julien’s Auctions accepts bids in person, by telephone, or online on June 18th, 2025, starting at 10am Pacific Time.

celebrating the life of a legend through a worldwide meditation

Alongside Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Inauguration Day, January 20th, 2025 would have been the 79th birthday of David Lynch. Following the visionary director’s passing on January 15th, the artist’s family has called for a ‘worldwide group meditation’ to be held today at 12:00pm PST to honor and remember his life. The David Lynch Foundation will host the virtual group meditation via Zoom (link here).

The event was announced on social media by the artist’s family who wrote on his official twitter account:David Lynch, our beloved dad, was a guiding light of creativity, love, and peace. On Monday, January 20th — what would have been his 79th birthday — we invite you all to join us in a worldwide group meditation at 12:00pm NOON PST for 10 minutes,’

Let us come together, wherever we are, to honor his legacy by spreading peace and love across the world. Please take this time to meditate, reflect, and send positivity into the universe. Thank you for being part of this celebration of his life.’ The tweet is signed by ‘Jennifer, Austin, Riley and Lula Lynch.’

david lynch’s transcendental meditation practice

For decades, David Lynch practiced Transcendental Meditation. Acknowledging that ‘happiness comes from within,’ that artist meditated twice daily from 1973 until his death. In 2005 the David Lynch Foundation was founded to teach ‘TM’ to both adults and children worldwide in an effort to share Conscious-Based education and promote World Peace.

The artist wrote:I started Transcendental Meditation in 1973 and have not missed a single meditation ever since. Twice a day, every day. It has given me effortless access to unlimited reserves of energy, creativity and happiness deep within. This level of life is sometimes called ‘pure consciousness’ — it is a treasury. And this level of life is deep within us all.’

The David Lynch Foundation describes Transcendental Meditation:It is a simple, natural, effortless technique practiced 20 minutes twice a day while sitting comfortably with the eyes closed. It’s not a religion, philosophy or lifestyle.’

[It] allows the active thinking mind to settle inward to experience a naturally calm, peaceful level of awareness. During TM, the body enjoys a profoundly rejuvenating rest, while the brain functions with significantly greater coherence.’

david lynch’s storytelling and spacemaking legacy

Visionary director and artist David Lynch has passed away on January 16th, 2025, at the age of 78. Known for his dreamlike contributions to cinema and television, Lynch’s influence spanned well beyond film, leaving an indelible mark on the worlds of art, music, and design. His enigmatic style defied conventional storytelling, and captured the surreal, the uncanny, and the abstract in his work. His deeply imaginative mind allowed him to work across a variety of mediums, making him one of the most versatile and influential figures in contemporary art and design.

the filmmaker’s multidisciplinary career

Lynch’s directorial career began with his surreal 1977 debut Eraserhead, which demonstrated his embrace of unconventional narratives and a uniquely atmospheric aesthetic. He went on to direct some of cinema’s most iconic films, such as Blue Velvet (1986), Mulholland Drive (2001), and the beloved cult classic television series Twin Peaks. However, Lynch’s work was never limited to the screen. He was a painter, sculptor, photographer, and musician — all of which fed into his cinematic works. He hybridized art and design into one cohesive language to find expression in both his films and in numerous design and architectural collaborations over the years.

david lynch’s rooms and spaces

Most recently, Lynch made a memorable showing at the 2024 Salone del Mobile Milano, one of the largest and most important international design fairs. His installation, Dreamscapes, was both a reflection of his dreamlike aesthetic and a commentary on space, perception, and the subconscious — all taking shape as an immersive, draping red velvet environment. His ability to evoke emotions through abstract forms and his singular approach to spatial storytelling left a mesmerizing impression.

In addition to his work at Salone del Mobile, Lynch’s contributions to architecture and design is well-documented throughout his career. He often cited architecture as a major influence on his cinematic world-building, describing spaces as living, breathing entities in his films.

Author Richard Martin explored Lynch’s architectural influences through his book, The Architecture of David Lynch. Bloomsbury Publishing writes: ‘From the Red Room in Twin Peaks to Club Silencio in Mulholland Drive, the work of David Lynch contains some of the most remarkable spaces in contemporary culture.’ University of Vermont professor Todd McGowan says: ‘Architecture is more central to the cinema of David Lynch than that of any other film-maker, and now a book finally exists that not only grasps architecture’s significance for Lynch but shows that it is impossible to understand these films without a thorough knowledge of the role that architecture plays in them.’

Lynch’s ability to create mood and atmosphere through design elements became a hallmark of his approach, influencing fellow filmmakers, architects and designers who sought to create immersive, evocative environments in their own projects.

the unknown in mondo reale

As part of the 23rd International Exhibition Triennale Milano titled ‘Unknown Unknowns. An Introduction to Mysteries,’ Fondation Cartier presents ‘Mondo Reale’ (meaning ‘real world’), a museum show conceived by Hervé Chandès, the artistic and general director of the Fondation Cartier, together with Formafantasma for the exhibition design and seventeen international contemporary artists whose works have been especially commissioned for the show. The exhibition runs from July 15th to December 11th, 2022 at Triennale Milano.

How does one know the feeling of the unknown? To discover, unfold, and ponder. To look at the sky the mathematicians and poets explored and experienced. To encounter faith, natural disasters, and the vastness of cultured cultures. The unknown leaves reality a dose of amazement, incredulity, amusement, disorientations, dismay, questions, worries, curiosity, and the boundaries, or lack of, knowledge. To perceive the world as the harbinger of mystery. Mondo Reale imagines a landing on our planet, a step into the unknown of the everyday world and an invitation to visitors to unearth the mysteries of the unknown by letting their imagination, curiosity, and emotions run wild.

Traditions, psychology, and self at the beginning

The public-art journey begins with a two-headed creature by artist Virgil Ortiz titled Ring Master & Tics (2022). The ceramic tradition of the Pueblo Cochiti remains celebrated as the artist weaves the narratives of the Native Americans and their revolt, incorporating his personal experience and the nuances of science fiction and apocalypse. From the figment of imagination imposed by the otherworldly themes, Ron Mueck’s Man in a Boat (2002) pulls the visitors into the psychology of self and reality as the artist creates a sculpture of himself nude in a boat to journey on an ancestral voyage of discovery and self-discovery. He might be gazing into nothingness, but his eyes and creased eyebrows brim with curiosity and loss, a reflection of transitory emotions people feel at some point in their lives.

For a sound installation, singer Patti Smith reads the text by mathematician Misha Gromov titled The Four Mysteries of the World. Her voice croons and reveals the fifth mystery, the art of poetry. Yet the linguistic device now takes the form of an in-depth feeling, a burning passion found in passion, just as how Sho Shibuya showcases his poetic interpretation of the timeline of sunrises and events through New York Times headlines. His framed series Headlines: 2020–2022 is anchored on a wall, so visitors can pad through the transition, one step at a time.

Mondo reale draws from the bible and mythology

The hints of natural events continue with the personal glossary of artist Alex Cerveny, woven with references and figures from the Bible as he visually links the names of people and places through maps to reorder human knowledge, from mythology to soap opera. A conversation between Paul Virilio and Nobel Prize Svetlana Alexievich takes place in Andrei Ujica’s film Unknown Quantity (2002/2005) where they address the new world born out of the Chernobyl disaster. The medium of film overlaps with filmmaker Andrei Ujica’s 2Pasolini (2000/2021), a homage to Pier Paolo Pasolini’s spirituality and as a revered figure whose 100th birth anniversary is celebrated this year.

The separation between reality and imagination of artist Yann Kebbi – often blurred albeit the effort to distinguish both – attempts to narrate the appearance of the artworks in Mondo Reale and their articulation in the space, seemingly tying everything in a single thread. Yet Artavazd Pelechian’s film Nature (2020) roots viewers back to the ground through humanity’s relationship with the natural world. An anthology of monochromatic clips produces a cinematic experience to depict nature’s force only the Divine can control.

Geography, physics, and the waves of the sea

Mystery and alienation confer the ceramic bowls of artist Alev Ebüzziya Siesbye (Untitled, 1997-2019) the motifs and reminiscence of the sea that spread across the surface of Sea wave (2022), a large-scale pencil drawing by artist Hu Liu, the spirit of traditional Oriental painting gracing the contemporary times. A double eclipse in a landscape of disorganized objects and geographies, presented by Guillermo Kuitca’s painting (Double Eclipse, 2013), forecasts the state of the world. A bear confronts its own reflection in the water: a teddy bear, a TedHyber, is the subject of three paintings by Fabrice Hyber, a highlight of the many possible points of view on the world, the irony of duplicity and multiplicity ofinterpretations that deliver truths and lies.

Tracing Fallen Sky (2020) by artist Sarah Sze draws from physics through its use of the pendulum, an ancient scientific instrument designed to track the Earth’s rotation, measure time and space, and explain the natural world. Mathematics steps at the core of reflection as Jessica Wynne photographed the blackboard of physicist Carlo Rovelli, bearing one of the writings by the greatest scientists of contemporary times to offer a vision of knowledge and its erasure. Similarly, the video by Jean-Michel Alberola, La Main de Cédric Villani (la conjecture de Cercignani) captures the gestures of mathematician Cédric Villani as he illustrates Cercignani’s conjecture on his blackboard.

David Lynch concludes mondo reale

The works of Jaider Esbell – an activist who had been part of the resistance movement of the indigenous people of the Roraima state in Brazil – illustrate the myths of the Macuxi people in a multiverse that encompasses microcosms and macrocosms. Then, David Lynch appears in the exhibition with three works. The special project Weather Report live in the exhibition space. The installation Universe Coming from Zero (2011), an animated catalog of all the objects in the universe commissioned by Fondation Cartier for the Paris exhibition Mathematics, a Beautiful Elsewhere in 2011.

The film What Did Jack Do? (2017) ends the exhibition sequence, a black-and-white film set in a train station, where a homicide detective played by Lynch himself corners an unusual suspect. As the short film ends the journey to the unknown, the case still remains unsolved. Mystery does not end with the conclusion of the exhibition. It only begins another exploration.

david lynch: naming
mima, middlesbrough
december 12th 2014 – march 26th 2015

since he is probably best recognized for his highly unique cinematic style as a film and television director — creating the iconic twin peaks, eraserhead and blue velvet — many may not know that david lynch originally studied painting and has developed a wide oeuvre of fine art printmaking, photography and drawing. middlesbrough institute of modern art (mima) hosts an exhibition of lynch’s work on paper and short films entitled ‘naming’, tracing the ways in which he has explored titles and labels throughout his career, from 1968 to the present.

the complex relationship developed between objects and their names has been thematic throughout the multifaceted artist’s work since ‘the alphabet’, the second short film he made as a student and shown as part of the exhibition. labels are not always descriptive of items in lynch’s surreal and  beautiful universe and the act of naming something never comes as a simple exercise. instead, his images and text create new meanings and a deeper understanding of how language operates, and the ways in which communication changes with context.

silencio club owners arnaud frisch, manu barron and anthony caton invited david lynch to create a ‘unique club experience’ the result is a new space located at 42 rue montmartre that is inspired by and named after club silencio from the film mulholland drive made by  lynch in 2001. ‘I’m 65 years old… they say that when men go into their 50s they dream of building gigantic towers to prove their virility. I have directed films, composed music, made all sorts of objects,  works that had a beginning and an end. now i want to make something solid. first, I started with painting.

for the last three years I have been working in a lithographic studio in montparnasse that  picasso and miró used, drawing on the same stones where they painted. then I started working on silencio, which has taken the last two years. looking at what we have done, I feel myself almost immortal.‘  – david lynch told l’express (via the guardian) lynch collaborated with: ENIA architects, raphael navot, thierry dreyfus, quinette, domeau & peres, kuntzel & deygas and ateliers gohard to realize his designs. silencio will open to its members from october 6, 2011.

gold: golden monochrome is the colour signature of the silencio, whether the gold be real, pure metal or elaborated powder projections on floors and walls, it creates a game of shadows and lights… this technical feat was made possible thanks to the traditional craftsmanship of ateliers gohard who have lead their traditional techniques in a contemporary field.

organic mathematics: the club is shielded with a strong motive of randomly scattered raw wood cladding blocks that provide the space with a protector soul. this texture allows the silencio to be moved in space-time.

circulation: several volumes compose the silencio: live stage with a game on lights, a deep and spacious cinema, an intimate art library, or an illusive forest as a smoking room. a shifting of underground volumes connected by lacquered extrusions allows a curious transition of material and ambiances. the whole club was conceived following an intuitive study of transitions, and the core of the club is the bar around which the singular volumes circulate.

light: light designer thierry dreyfus collaborated on the light direction of the space.

innovative craftsmanship and design: a carpet printed by david lynch is covering the main entrance hall, the bar and lounges area spread according to the space flow. a customized wall texture of decomposed marble was developed with ‘signature murale’.

furniture: david lynch has been designing and building furniture for many years. three series from his works have been realized for the silencio:

wire: the ‘wire’ series (manufactured by domeau & peres) are welcoming seats and sofas in the library lounge, characterized by a curved metal rod that is harmonically unjustified in its clustered complexity, positioned under each seat.

‘cinema seats’ by david lynch (manufactured by quinette)

cinema seats: the cinema seats (manufactured by quinette) are the result of a special ergonomic study that has been conducted to match a spacious and atypical manner to experience the cinema viewing. the seat owns a reduced inclination and straightforward geometry to allow the guests a liberated position. each seat has its leg stretch pouf, tray, lamp and uncompromised space. projected bronze has been applied to the entire support of the seat.
