Terraviva launches THE SPORT DISTRICT, a new international competition that challenges architects, designers and urban planners to rethink the main sports area of Codroipo, a small Italian town in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, as a contemporary civic campus where sports and culture meet to shape new models of social engagement!

Prizes up to 12.000 € will be awarded to the winners, selected by an international jury including Francesco Garofalo (Openfabric), Alessandra Baldin (Comune di Codroipo), Giovanni Aurino (OD’A Officina d’Architettura) and Silvia Gelain (Atelier Chony), among others.

BRIEF

Just steps from Codroipo’s historic centre, a wide and underutilised sports complex awaits a fresh vision. Scattered between football pitches, tennis courts, indoor gyms and open grounds, the site shows signs of age and lacks a unified identity – yet it holds immense potential.

This competition invites participants to reimagine the entire area as a “diffused sports plaza”, transforming it into a daily destination for movement, gathering and cultural events. Central to the design challenge is the creation of a general masterplan, integrating existing infrastructures with new spaces for community use, as well as the design of a multipurpose gym that can host both athletic and cultural functions.

PRIZES

• 1st Prize: 7.000€
• 2nd Prize: 2.000€
• 3rd Prize: 1.000€
• 5 Golden Mentions: coupon for a free membership
• 10 Honorable Mentions: coupon for a free competition
• 30 Finalists: published on Terraviva channels

GUIDELINES

Together with the concept masterplan and the new gym, participants are encouraged to propose creative, inclusive and sustainable solutions: from fitness paths and shaded rest areas to skateparks and landscape-enhancing interventions. Every proposal should activate the site beyond sports, making it a welcoming public space that lives from morning to night, and across seasons.

All designs must remain within the project area boundaries, using sustainable materials and ensuring universal accessibility. Participants are free to add complementary uses, such as outdoor rest areas, informal play zones, or adaptive reuse strategies for existing buildings.

REQUESTED MATERIAL

Three A1 panels (59,4 x 84,1 cm – horizontal) and a brief text describing the proposal (250-500 words).

The Architect’s Stair Edition #3 https://www.designboom.com/competition/the-architects-stair-edition-3/ Wed, 24 Sep 2025 23:41:12 +0000 https://www.designboom.com/?post_type=competition&p=1155905 Take a step and make a statement!

The post The Architect’s Stair Edition #3 appeared first on designboom | architecture & design magazine.

]]>
The stair is one of the most elemental and enduring components of architecture. It is a structure in motion—a connector of levels, a sculptural form, a spatial sequence, and a symbol of ascent, descent, and transition. It guides the body and engages the mind. It is at once practical and poetic.

From ancient stone steps carved into cliffs to futuristic floating staircases in contemporary design, the stair has served far more than a functional role. It punctuates the rhythm of space, dictates circulation, and often becomes a central visual and emotional anchor in architectural composition. It holds narrative power—inviting pause, procession, and perception.

This 3rd edition of the competition invites architects, designers, and creative thinkers to explore the stair as a pure expression of architectural language. Participants are asked to reflect on its symbolism, geometry, movement, and potential—free from constraints of program, material, or scale. There are no limitations on style, function, context, or dimension. Whether monumental or minimal, abstract or inhabitable, real or speculative—what matters is the clarity and creativity of the concept.

We are not looking for compliance with regulations or typical stair design solutions. Instead, this is a conceptual exploration of an essential architectural element, reimagined as a means of expressing your unique design philosophy. How can a stair tell a story? How can it embody spatial ideas, emotions, ideologies, or atmospheres? How can it become a metaphor, a movement, a manifesto?

Take a step and make a statement! The stair is your subject—but your imagination defines its boundaries. Celebrate it. Deconstruct it. Transform it.

The post CANDELO URBAN LINK: A Contemporary Public Space for a Historic Village appeared first on designboom | architecture & design magazine.

]]>
Terraviva launches CANDELO URBAN LINK, a new international competition that challenges participants to transform an overlooked square in the heart of a Piedmontese village into an inclusive, vibrant public space, reconnecting its split levels and reimagining its role as a civic landmark.

Prizes up to 12.000 € will be awarded to the winners selected by an international jury panel composed, among others, by Barbara Acquadro Maran (Comune di Candelo), Stefano Recalcati (Arup), Lucia Paci (Operastudio) and Toufic Rifai (Lombardini 22).

BRIEF

Nestled in a medieval Piedmontese village lies a square fragmented by a steep level change and stripped of a clear identity. This competition invites designers to envision its transformation into an accessible, multifunctional space – one that serves as both a daily passageway for schoolchildren and families and a vibrant gathering place for the wider community.

At the heart of the challenge is the redesign of the connection between the square’s two levels, replacing or integrating the existing staircase with a ramp system that becomes a defining feature of the site.

Around this central intervention, participants are encouraged to develop a holistic vision for the entire space: reorganising parking, weaving in greenery and shaded areas, adding urban furniture, sports facilities and flexible zones.

PRIZES

• 1st Prize: 7.000€
• 2nd Prize: 2.000€
• 3rd Prize: 1.000€
• 5 Golden Mentions: coupon for a free membership
• 10 Honorable Mentions: coupon for a free competition
• 30 Finalists: published on Terraviva channels

GUIDELINES

Candelo Urban Link embraces the principles of Tactical Urbanism – promoting lightweight, adaptable and cost-effective solutions capable of delivering a lasting impact. The goal is to pair functional improvements with a strong visual identity, turning a neglected corner into a welcoming civic landmark that honours the town’s heritage while embracing a contemporary vision of public space.
The square should no longer be perceived or experienced as a mere passage, but as a welcoming outdoor living room: a place to meet, rest, play and interact.

Choose a site–used, abandoned, or forgotten–anywhere in the world, and give it a new purpose!

In a world facing urgent environmental and spatial challenges, the most sustainable solutions may come not from new construction, but from reimagining what already exists. Re:Form Edition #2 invites architects, designers, and innovators to embrace the challenge of adaptive reuse, working within spaces under 250 square meters to give them renewed purpose and relevance.

Participants are free to choose any existing structure–whether currently in use, abandoned, or neglected–anywhere in the world. From unused storefronts and aging sheds to underutilized garages or portions of larger buildings, each project should demonstrate the potential to transform a limited footprint into something innovative and impactful.

This competition celebrates the ingenuity required to balance sustainability, functionality, and design within an existing space. How can we rethink these structures to serve new purposes, meet contemporary needs, and make a positive impact on their communities? Re:Form Edition #2 is an invitation to bring fresh perspectives to old spaces, showing that thoughtful adaptation can be a powerful tool in shaping a sustainable future.
